I’m pretty thrilled to have this piece in Huffpost Personal published today! Yesterday, International Women’s Day, was the anniversary of my surgery, but the conversation I recount in the first paragraph of this article happened exactly a year ago today. How’s that for the Universe lining things up!
I’d like to thank my dear new friend Brenda Keesal for connecting me with Noah Michelson, the amazing editor at Huffpost who took this on. Do pay Brenda a visit at her blog burns the fire: her gorgeously told stories of life and death and especially love are always an adventure of wondrous inspiration as she shines her brilliant, unique light into the odd corners of our beautiful world.
Wonderful article, Susan. And your gifts continue to be given to the world, and rippling out ever farther. Happy anniversary, strange though it may be!

Incredible article. Thank you. I once asked my grandmother if she was afraid of dying. I was a young child. She smiled at me and said that it was nothing to fear. That was nearly 55 years ago. I never forgot that.

What a beautiful piece. It brought tears to my eyes. As a mother, I really felt what having that conversation with your boys must have been like…well, obviously I could not, but I can imagine some small part, anyway. You are amazing. So glad I found your blog.

“But the flip side of grief is gratitude for having had whatever is lost to begin with.” So true. I lost my mom 2 years ago. It felt like I was reading her words and made me feel like she is at peace.

Susan, I just read your inspirational story at the Huffington Post site. Thank you for being so public about your situation. I a am lucky pancreatic cancer survivor. I was fortunate enough to be diagnosed early, and thus able to have Whipple surgery. I am thankful every day.
I too want to give back. So I just started my own blog on Living Well While Surviving Cancer ( https://survingcancerembracinglife.com). I will feature you in a post on at that blog on July 11, 2018. You are a tremendous role model.

Hey Susan I just read your article in Huffington post .. I’m in tears, literally. Coz, I know what loosing is, as I lost my dad, suddenly couple of nights after we planned summer vacation.
But, I’m sure you will live. My aunt had cancer and doctors had lost hope . With prayers and optimism she is improving day by day🙂
I’m sure prayers have power & you will be fine Susan soon. Read the stories of survivors. I’m an Indian, there are the likes of our celebs like Manisha Koirala, Yuvraj Singh, Lisa Hayden who returned back more fit than ever.
